The power of the wind is an energy source that has been known to mankind for centuries. The earliest known windmills were in Persia (Iran). In 200 B.C., people in China and the Middle East used windmills to pump water and grind grain. Later on, windmills were used by people in the Netherlands to dry land so they could use it for farming and building houses. They gave the windmill its propeller-type blades, made with sails. Holland is famous for its windmills. Over the centuries, technology advanced and changed the way windmills looked. Nowadays, wind mills are big light grey masts with three blades and are called wind turbines. This has proved to be the most efficient model and fits in best with our landscape.
